Macklem said he wasn’t moved by Lecuyer’s tearful apology.
“She has taken every step to make sure that this process in every court has been as lengthy as it could possibly be, and that, to me, speaks to a complete and utter lack of remorse. She wanted to see if my resolve for justice was as much as her resolve to make me go through this.”

Standing in court Friday morning before her sentencing with shorter, darker hair and wearing a red pullover, Lecuyer delivered her apology through a prepared statement.
“I’m truly sorry,” she said. “You’re a nice man. You have a kind heart. The same person manipulated both of us,” she said of her husband Nolan Johnson, who is in Jamaica. “I’m truly sorry for the mess that came into your life.”

Macklem, who suffers from cerebral palsy, listened in his wheelchair. Judge John Johnston said the fraud was an elaborate scheme that took advantage of a man starved for love Macklem hired Lecuyer in 2004 and their relationship progressed from an escort and client to that of a couple. Soon after, he believed they were engaged and he mortgaged his home, cashed out his RRSPs and poured his inheritance into her scheme for a small resort in the Dominican Republic where they would live in paradise.
